Why Mirrorless? Why the hell not | FullFrameBoy

The question I get asked most by friends and family lately is where have my DSLRs gone? Why are my current cameras so small? Why mirrorless? My usual answer is along the lines of, “it’s not a bad way of carrying a backup around, or taking on holiday for nice shots without lugging your DSLR.” There are a lot of different answers, but I still can’t work out why more people haven’t made the switch. I know, I know, very shortsighted of me. Of course people who have been shooting Canon, Nikon, etc have accrued loads of glass and accessories over the years and it’s not just easy dumping the lot and rebuying in the mirrorless world. The latest Alpha camera from Sony, the A7[r] has really changed the photography ‘game’ for 2014 – if you don’t mind adapting lenses or settling with the pretty poor showing of original E-mount glass from Sony and Zeiss. The kit lens is a kit lens. It’s not small, light, sharp, fast, or many other qualities you’d associate with a standard zoom bundled with a camera body. That’s fine, we get that. What’s hard to swallow is the fact that there are very few choices for other auto-focus FE-mount lenses without adapting A-mount or doing what many A7[r] owners are doing and making use of their old Leica, Canon FD, Nikon F, Olympus OM or various M42 & M39-mount lenses…….
