Why Leica? | Matt Day

While there’s already a certain mystique to Leica cameras, specifically the Leica M series, I’ve always wanted to express my feelings and thoughts on the subject. It often becomes a conversation piece whenever I’m talking to other photographers and certainly, there’s usually a bit of debate involved. While no camera is the „best camera“ out there, I believe it’s important for a photographer to explore their options. By doing so, I’ve tried just about every kind of camera out there. Everything from digital to film, 35mm to 4×5, instant film, you name it. But when I finally landed on Leica, something changed. Let me talk a little bit about how I decided to buy a Leica. My introduction to Leica was through skateboarding. Reading interviews and meeting skateboard photographers, I noticed that a lot of my favorite photographers seemed to have a Leica around their neck. After looking up more information about Leica, I learned about the history and the „culture“ of Leica. The entire appeal was that I was getting a mechanical, film camera that was small, fast, and was gonna last me. It could be a daily camera that I could always have on me. But there are plenty of other options at a much cheaper price. I was looking at over $1000 just for the body, let alone also buying a lens. So for years, I kept telling myself it wasn’t necessary……….
